About the Beta Program
The RedEye system is a new product and we want to get it right. We believe that in order to do so, we need to gather as much feedback as possible from people who live with it. As a result, we have decided to launch the RedEye as a public beta. What does that mean exactly? Well...
First, we should say that the RedEye hardware is not in beta. This is tried and tested production hardware. We are offering it at a discount so that we can cover our manufacturing costs, and we are limiting the number of units we are making so that we can maintain a high level of customer support during the beta period. But when the beta period is over and we release the production software updates, all of our beta testers will have the full production system.
Second, there are a few rough edges. In particular, the setup process is not as streamlined as we want it to be. For example, we have not yet put in place a database of remote control codes, so beta customers will need to use the “learning” function of the product to capture remote control signals from their existing remote controls. Currently, an average system takes about 90 minutes to set up. When we provide a production update this fall, our goal is to make setup a 10 minute process — we just aren’t there yet.
Finally, we want our beta customers to help us refine and improve the product. Maybe the user interface or our documentation is not as clear as it could be. Maybe there is some “must-have” feature that we have left out. Now is a great opportunity for people with strong opinions to let us know what they think. So, if you fit into that category, by all means, please become one of our beta customers.
