Announcing IP Control
Universal remotes have long held the promise of seamlessly integrating a number of devices in one, simple interface. In doing so, they have made use of infrared control signals — a generic, but unsophisticated and sometimes unreliable communication method. Now for the first time in an affordable, consumer-grade package, RedEye offers control using Internet Protocol (IP). The same pipes that you use to read email and surf the web can deliver reliable, two-way control.
What is so special about IP control? For starters, there are no line of sight issues, and no cables to run — as long as everything is on your network, it just works. Second, IP control is bi-directional. With infrared, your remote sends commands out, but the device you are controlling never responds. With IP control, your RedEye and the devices you control actively communicate. That means your remote control can be more sophisticated — displaying things like cover art, current track name, and so forth. You can even do away with those pesky on-screen keyboards.
Where are the other IP remote controls? More and more of our electronics are networked, but until now controlling those devices meant that you had to write a special program for each one. Sure, there are a handful of device-specific mobile apps available for download, but nothing that integrates your existing infrared-controlled devices with newer IP-controlled devices in one place. RedEye is the first universal IP remote control. Our online database allows you to download the control codes you need so that you do not have to be a programmer or pay for a separate application in order to take advantage of IP control.
IP control is available through a free software update to new and existing RedEye and RedEye Pro customers.
